Poverty In England 1601-1936 - N.J. Smith

As England emerged in the nineteenth century with all the wealth and abundance of the first industrial nation, the condition of her poorer families did not improve. Chased from the land by enclosure and engrossment, the labourers went to live in urban tenements and to work in the harsh conditions of the early factories. Poverty manifested itself in many ways-malnutrition, scant clothing, filthy and congested housing, ignorance, crime and violence.

The poor were at the mercy of fluctuating economic circumstances, bad harvests, slumps in world markets, new production methods, rising population. These causes were not generally understood and government was still too unsophisticated to remedy the shocking results. Only slowly did public opinion come to accept full responsibility for the care and employment of the poor.

This book relates, in pictures and contemporary writing, the problem of poverty as it developed over 3 centuries.
